First Look - Last Resort and its Star-studded Cast

Channel 5 has released a first-look image from its upcoming mystery drama Last Resort, featuring a star-studded cast in what has been described as a "deceptively dark tale of village life".

The series is written by Matthew Thomas, who previously penned the Channel 5 thriller Missed Call, which aired earlier this year and starred Joanna Scanlan, Rupert Graves and Claire Keim.

In Last Resort (working title) screen legend Caroline Quentin stars as Gail, who takes her sister Joy (Niamh Cusack), who is living with dementia, on the bucket-list trip of a lifetime alongside friends Jan (Tessa Peake-Jones) and Dennis (Jason Watkins).

However, all is not as it seems when a supposed accident results in tragedy. Convinced that it wasn't an accident at all, the friends launch an investigation of their own.

"As old crimes surface and dark patterns emerge, the group of friends finds that this seemingly idyllic resort town – with its beach walks, pub lunches and good-natured bickering – hides something far more sinister," a Channel 5 spokesperson said.

They added: "Together they must piece together one devastating mystery and track down a killer who has been hunting in this close-knit coastal community and beyond."

Last Resort also stars Bronagh Waugh as Joy's daughter Kate and John Hannah as DI Simon Lund. The supporting cast includes Cathy Belton, Ella Dacres, Chizzy Akudolu and Tadhg Murphy.

Set to air in 2027, Quentin said: "I'm thrilled to be on screen with two of my long-time favourite actors, Tessa Peake-Jones and Jason Watkins. With the added joy of Bronagh, Niamh and the rest of this brilliant cast, it's an unstoppable team. Matthew Thomas has created something moving, funny and terrifying. It's quite a ride."
